In the Jallianwala Bagh incident of April 13, 1919, General Dyer killed thousands of unarmed Indians. This incident shocked the whole country. As news of the incident began to spread, crowds took to the streets in many cities across northern India. There were strikes, clashes with police, and attacks on government buildings. The government responded with barbaric repression, seeking to humiliate and terrorise the people. After this massacre, Rabindranath Tagore, who had been knighted by the British, gave up his knighthood. Many Indians who believed in the British sense of fair play lost faith in the British government. This spurred greater nationalist fervour among the Indian population.
