Non-cooperation movement spread to the countryside. In Awadh, the peasants under the leadership of Baba Ram Chandra rebelled against the settlers and landowners, who demanded very high rents and other taxes from them. Farmers demanded a reduction in income, the abolition of the begar regime, and a boycott of oppressive landlords. In many places, local leaders told farmers that Gandhiji had said there were no taxes. In Andhra Pradesh's Gudem Hills, a guerrilla movement has spread. The colonial government closed the vast forests, which affected the livelihoods of the people living in the forests. When the government forced them to provide rough or free labour, they rebelled. Alluri Sitaram Raju, inspired by Gandhi's ideals, went to lead them and Gudem rebels to attack police stations and lead guerrilla warfare to get to Swaraj.
