There were only 321 steam engines in England at the start of the nineteenth century. The steam engine created by Newcomen was enhanced by James Watt, who patented the new engine in 1781. The new model was made by his business acquaintance Mathew Boulton. However, he struggled to sell for years. In all of England, at the start of the nineteenth century, there were just 321 steam engines. Eighty of them were in the cotton industry, nine in the wool industry, and the remaining were in the mining, canal-building, and iron working industries.
