It is a fundamental duty to defend the country and execute national services when needed. The Fundamental Duties were added in 1976 on the advice of Indira Gandhi's Swaran Singh Committee, which was formed shortly after the declaration of national emergency to review and alter the constitution.
Sardar Swaran Singh, India's longest-serving union cabinet minister, presided over this committee. The government implemented various amendments to the Constitution, including the Preamble, through the 42nd Amendment, which included the fundamental duties under the Indian Constitution, based on his recommendations. However, under Article 51A, Part IV-A of the Indian Constitution, the initial ten duties were increased by the 86th Amendment in 2002.
