However, the Christian community is divided into two groups, i.e., Catholics and Protestants. The political and social situation in Northern Ireland is worsened by the overlapping of class differences with religious differences. In other words, Catholics are generally poorer than Protestants. Being Catholic makes one more likely to be poor. This means that the social differences between the two sects turn into social divisions. This has led to long political and violent struggles between Catholics and Protestants. The blood-filled battle between the two groups could only be stopped with a peace treaty initiated by the government.
