Detailed Solution

The given statement is true.

Evolution paves the way for diversity and the shaping of the diversity by environmental selection.

The only progress in the due course of evolution is the emergence of more complex body designs as per the requirement to survive in a particular environment. Lower organisms have a simple body design whereas, higher organisms have a more complex body design  as they evolved due to the forces of natural selection in nature. A better body design (irrespective of whether simple or complex) is one that gives the organism a better chance to survive in a particular environment.

For example, a bacteria has the simplest body design but is found in all types of environments. It is found to exist in the most extreme environments where no other organism can grow or survive.

Thus, evolution cannot always be equated with progress because there is no real ‘progress’ in the idea of evolution.
