The above statement is false. The Sinhala Only Bill, a 1956 law that made Sinhalese the nation's official tongue, was adopted by the government of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). The law was the first action of the new administration of S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike carried on one of the critical campaign pledges that had led to his resounding win in the general election of 1956. The Tamil-speaking minority in Ceylon fiercely opposed the measure, and unrest ensued when it was passed. S.J.V. Chelvanayakam's Tamil Federal Party pushed for Ceylon to become a federal state. Bandaranaike and Chelvanayakam forged a deal to appease the Tamils that allowed Tamil to be used officially in Tamil-speaking districts. Under pressure from Sinhalese radicals, Bandaranaike, however, annulled this agreement in April 1958.
