The above statement is true. Sri Lanka took measures to establish Sinhala supremacy. In 1956, the Sri Lankan government passed an act which mentioned the Sinhala language as the official language of Sri Lanka. It strictly prohibits the use of any other language for any official purpose. For example, the Tamil language could not be used for government jobs or official work in the country. Hence, the chances of the progress of the Tamil-speaking community in Sri Lanka were reduced to a considerable extent. The Tamil-speaking community started to protest the government's measures, which later led to the brutal killings (and then civil war) of people from different communities.
