In the early years, the revolutionary government introduced laws that helped improve the lives of women. The French Revolution granted liberty only to men. The revolutionary government gave various political rights; in fact, the Constitution of 1791 started with the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen. Women were excluded entirely and categorised as passive citizens, i.e. they had no right to vote. But the government tried improving the lives of women a fraction by introducing laws. Schooling became mandatory for all girls. Forcing marriage against their will was no longer allowed. Marriage was made into a contract and registered under civil law. Divorce was legalised with the power of applying for it to both men and women. They were allowed to train for jobs or become artists and run small businesses, giving them a source of livelihood.
