After Aurangzeb, the Mughal Empire began to experience several challenges. Emperor Aurangzeb had exhausted his empire's financial and military resources by waging a protracted battle in the Deccan. The later Mughal rulers found it harder and harder to control their strong mansabdars. The revenue and military administration offices were frequently under the control of nobles appointed as governors, giving them exceptional political, economic and military authority over substantial portions of the Mughal Empire. The regular revenue remittance to the capital decreased as the governors strengthened their hold on the provinces. These issues were made worse by peasant and zamindari uprisings in northern and western India. Rising tax burdens and attempts by strong chieftains to strengthen their positions also contributed to these uprisings.
