More than half of the cattle in the Maasai reserve died in 1933 and 1934.
With the arrival of the British, the Maasai could no longer go in search of pastures because they were restricted to fixed areas or confined within reserves. The whites settled in the best grazing lands, pushing the Maasai herders into an arid corner where there was inadequate rainfall and frequent droughts. Since they could not shift their cattle to places, large numbers of animals died of disease and starvation in 1933 and 1934, i.e., two years of severe drought.
