Intercaste marriages have been avoided in India in the harshest ways one can think. Intercaste marriage is a marriage in which marriage has performed out of caste. Of course, there are examples of inter-caste marriages in India. But they are so few and not common in India. As per an estimate, the rate of inter-caste marriages remains low at only 11 per cent; the average is just 5 per cent. Out of this, only 5.58 per cent of cases are in which women marry men of lower caste, and only 5.38 per cent of this total 11 are cases in which men marry women of lower caste. Also, intercaste marriages are more common among the poor (5.9 per cent) compared to the rich (4 per cent). Whereas the sad truth is that inter-caste marriages are dread in India. The reasons are many and all unreasonable and baseless. They are just orthodox beliefs that continue to haunt the lives of people. Hence the correct statement would be, Inter-caste marriages are not a common thing in India.
