Detailed Solution

The above statement is true.
Gandhi was against untouchability and supported Dalits in many ways. Gandhi referred to Dalits as 'Harijans', which meant child of God or people of God. Dalits were part of Indian society, but they were exploited by the conservative thought of the upper-class Hindus. Usually, Dalits worked as toilet cleaners and were hence called Bhangi. The upper-class Hindus called them untouchables and discriminated against Dalits. For example, they could not enter temples and schools and also could not access public wells or tanks. However, Gandhiji considered that Swaraj would not be attained without eliminating untouchability. So he organised Satyagrahas for the Harijans to help them secure their rights and persuaded the upper class to abandon the 'sin of untouchability'.
