Giuseppe Garibaldi was an Italian General, politician and nationalist who played a large role in the history of Italy.
Garibaldi fought for Italian unity and forged almost all of northern and southern Italy. He commanded a guerrilla army to conquer Lombardy in Piedmon. He then occupied Sicily and Naples, surrendering Southern Italy to King Victor Emmanuel II of Piedmont, who founded the Italian Empire. He was instrumental in uniting Italy and in establishing the Italian Empire. Along with Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, Victor Emmanuel II of Italy, and Giuseppe Mazzini, he is regarded as one of the "fathers of the fatherland" of Italy. As a result of his military efforts in South America and Europe, Gibaldi is also known as the "World Warrior."
