In 1930, the Civil Disobedience Movement was launched. After a long struggle by movement and protest against the British, Gandhiji made 11 demands to the Viceroy Irwin and gave him a deadline for acceptance of these demands. In addition, he mentioned that if Irwin did not accept these demands, then Gandhi would launch the Civil Disobedience Movement to break the law. After that, Gandhiji started the Dandi march on 12 March 1930 to break the salt law. Gandhiji thought that if he launched a movement on the national level to abolish the salt law, it could unite the nation because salt was something essential consumed by rich and poor alike. Moreover, the salt tax revealed the oppressive face of British rule.
