Peasants of Kheda refused to pay revenue and land taxes. Mahatma Gandhi organised a Satyagraha in the Kheda district of Gujarat to support the peasants. When Gandhiji came to know about the distress of peasants because of the failure of crops, he advised them to withhold payments of taxes till their demand for remission was met. He and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel organised a struggle against the British government in 1918. Crops in Kheda failed because of the drought, but the government was not in the mood to exempt the peasants from paying revenue. Gandhiji had already tried this peaceful route of Satyagraha in Champaran, Bihar, and Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
