Trench foot, a frost-bite-like illness that, in severe cases, culminated in gangrene and amputation, was caused by the unhygienic circumstances of trench living, notably the cold and constant wetness. Heavy losses from the prolonged employment of artillery also resulted in other types of stress.
Hence, it was the First World War when the soldiers had to live in harsh conditions, particularly in Europe.
