Salt march became an effective tool against colonialism, starting after the First Round Table Conference. Gandhiji had made eleven demands in his letter to Viceroy Irwin. The most important demand was abolishing the salt law, as Gandhiji saw salt as a common medium to unite the country against the colonial powers. Moreover, salt was something essential consumed by the rich and poor alike, and a monopoly over its production revealed the oppressive nature of the British. Hence when the British did not oblige, he started the Dandi march on 12 March 1930. Gandhiji, with his 78 followers, reached Dandi and broke the salt law by making salt from seawater. Thus Gandhiji launched the Civil disobedience movement against colonialism with the Salt Satyagraha.
