In the 17th century, the Sikh community transformed from a social and religious society into a political one. The troops of Guru Gobind Singh, the Rajputs, and the Mughals fought in numerous battles. Guru Gobind Singh established the Khalsa organisation in 1699 CE. After that, the entire Khalsa Panth staged a coup against the Mughal government under the leadership of Banda Bahadur. He not only took over many provinces but also minted coins bearing the names of Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh and proclaimed himself to be the emperor. Between the Sutlej and Yamuna rivers, he even established his government. However, the Mughal Emperor sent out a sizable force to capture him. He was captured in 1715 and put to death in 1716. Hence the Sikh community remained more of a political society throughout the 17th century.
