Detailed Solution

The above statement is false.
About 44.3 per cent of the population was poor in 1993. However, there is a gradual fall in poverty proportions in India from around 45 per cent in 1993-94 to about 37.2 per cent in 2004–05. The ratio of people below the poverty line further fell to approximately 22 per cent in 2011–12. If the trend continues like this, people below the poverty line may fall to less than nearly 20 per cent in the upcoming few years. Though the proportion of people living in poverty reduced in the earlier two decades, that is, from 1973 to 1993, the number of poor reduced from 407 million in 2004–05 to 270 million in 2011–12, along with an average yearly reduction of 2.2 per cent during 2004–05 to 2011–12. Hence the correct statement would be, About 44.3percent of the population was poor in 1993.
