Even if they had a low crop production in a particular year, the peasants were required to pay the revenue. They had to sell their produce at a loss to pay the taxes. Neither the British nor the zamindars attempted to improve the state of agriculture. The farmers had no other option than to turn to moneylenders who charged exorbitant interest rates for loans because they could not pay their debts. A similar situation persisted in the ensuing years as well. The peasants continued to be dissatisfied and feel oppressed by the prevailing system, whether they lived in permanently inhabited zamindari zones or only intermittently. The zamindars controlled their fate.
