Following the agitation of the Bengali ryots against the European indigo planters throughout the late 1850s, the Indigo Commission was established. Indigo harvesting has historically been associated with coercion and tyranny in Bengal. Whenever the planters obtained the right to own the land, they used it as leverage to compel the ryots to produce indigo and threatened to raise rent unless they didn't do so. Additionally, the planters failed to pay the ryots the correct price for the harvest. When the price of indigo fell on the global market in the middle of the nineteenth century, following the fall in the price of gold, the situation only worsened. The planters forced the indigo ryots to maintain production despite their refusal to cultivate this crop.
