The NSSO was established in 1950 to carry out extensive sample surveys across India. Until May 2019, the National Sample Survey Office was a part of the Indian government's Ministry of Statistics. However, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and the NSSO will be merged into the National Statistical Office (NSO) on May 23, 2019, per an order from the Indian government (NSO).
