The Rowlatt Act gave the government the right to detain someone without holding a trial. Despite the united opposition of the Indian MPs, the British administration enacted this act in 1919. It granted the government a great deal of power. Thus the British government could suppress political activity and permit the two-year detention of political prisoners without charge. Indians decided to start a statewide Satyagraha against the  Rowlatt Act (1919) under Mahatma Gandhi's direction. They responded by organising organised rallies in many cities, shutting down stores, and the employees also went on strike railway workshops.
