Churaman was a Jat leader. Like the other states in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Jats also emerged as a powerful community to take over the territories situated to the west of the city of Delhi. Churaman was the leader of the Jats, who acquired control over territories by the 1680s. They also consolidated their power and began dominating the Delhi and Agra regions. By profession, Jats were prosperous agriculturists and dominated the towns like Panipat and Ballabgarh, trading centres of that time.
