CO2 is not liberated during lactic acid fermentation. During lactic acid fermentation, pyruvate is converted to lactic acid with the help of the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase. In this process, NADH is oxidized to NAD+ to regenerate the supply of NAD+ needed for glycolysis to continue. One of the byproducts of this process is CO2, which is released as a gas.
