Coal of tertiary age is found in northeastern India. Coal is an important raw material used by industries in India. A conventional resource, coal reserves are fast depleting due to increased use. India mainly has tertiary and Gondwana coal deposits. The tertiary deposits are the major coal reserves in India found in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh. It is about 55 million years old and is very young compared to the Gondwana coal, which is more than 200 million years old. Jharia, Bokaro, and Raniganj are important coal fields in India, supplying coal to industries as their energy sources. Coal deposits are also found in the Damodar valley and West Bengal.
