When the volunteers with Mahatma Gandhi broke the salt law on April 6th, 1930, they got worried by the developments and started arresting the Congress leaders. The government responded with a policy of brutal repression and Attacked the Satyagrahis. Women and children were beaten. The arrest of these leaders led to violent clashes with the government.
