Colonial rulers considered forests as unproductive. However, the land produces agricultural goods, generates income and increases the state's revenue. So the area under cultivation increased by 6.7 million hectares between 1880 and 1920. Commercial crops output of jute, sugar, wheat and cotton was directly influenced by the British. These crops grew in nineteenth-century Europe as food grains were needed to sustain the expanding urban population, and raw materials were required for industrial manufacture.
