The gas turns moist blue litmus to red.
Dry HCl gas is produced in the test tube when concentrated hydrochloric acid is added to common salt taken in a test tube. This gas does not change the colour of dry litmus paper because in absence of water it does not dissociate into H+ ions. Blue litmus paper that is wet turns red when exposed to HCl gas vapours because now in presence of water it dissociates to give H+ ions.
