Detailed Solution

Models of an atom:

Thomson modelRutherford modelBohr's model
An atom consists of a positively charged sphere and electrons embedded in it.In this model, there is a positively charged center in an atom, called the nucleus. Nearly all the mass of an atom resides in the nucleus.  In this model, only certain special orbits known as the discrete orbit of electrons, are allowed inside the atom.
The number of electrons is equal to the number of protons. The electrons revolve around the nucleus in circular paths. While revolving the electrons do not radiate energy. These orbits are called shells.
Thus, an atom is neutral. The size of the nucleus is very small compared to the size of an atom. There is a loss or gain in energy of electrons when moving from one orbit to another orbit.
