                                        ${\mathrm{CH}}_3{\mathrm{CH}}_2\mathrm{OH} + {\mathrm{CH}}_3\mathrm{COOH}\stackrel{{\mathrm{H}}_2{\mathrm{SO}}_4}{\to }{\mathrm{CH}}_3{\mathrm{COOCH}}_2{\mathrm{CH}}_3 + {\mathrm{H}}_2\mathrm{O}$

When ethanol $\left({\mathrm{CH}}_3{\mathrm{CH}}_2\mathrm{OH}\right)$ and ethanoic acid $\left({\mathrm{CH}}_3\mathrm{COOH}\right)$ react with each other in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid $\left({\mathrm{H}}_2{\mathrm{SO}}_4\right)$, elimination of 1 mole of water $\left({\mathrm{H}}_2\mathrm{O}\right)$ takes place, and ester $\left({\mathrm{CH}}_3{\mathrm{COOCH}}_2{\mathrm{CH}}_3\right)$ is formed. 

On smelling it just after the mixing in the test tube, you will sense a fruity smell coming out of it.
