Congress in the first twenty years was dominated by the Moderates. The objectives and methods of Congress in the first twenty years were “moderate”. The Moderate leaders showed people the unjust nature of British rule. They published newspapers and wrote articles to make the people aware of it and they showed how British rule led to the economic crisis in the country. They criticised British rule in their speeches. The moderates believed in liberalism and moderate politics. They thought that British rulers have respect for the ideals of freedom, and when they will be made aware of the plight of Indian citizens, then they will improve the lives of people. Later many raised questions against the Indian national congress. As a result, the party was split into two- moderates and radicals.
