Detailed Solution

The Lahore session of the Congress of December 1929 formalized the demand for full independence or 'Purna Swaraj.' This was in response to the vague offer of dominion status for India provided by the then Viceroy Lord Irwin. 26 January 1930 was declared by the Lahore Congress as Independence Day. It urged every Indian to celebrate it and take a pledge to wage a struggle for complete independence. Despite the significance of this event, Independence Day garnered little attention from others, much to the disappointment of Mahatma Gandhi.
