Detailed Solution

Acid deposition is another name for acid rain. Since it has a pH of equal to or lower than 5.2 as a result of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, it is known as "acid rain." Fossil fuel combustion is primarily responsible for these pollutants.

The two main causes of acid deposition are the smelting of metal ores and the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil. These create sulfide and nitrogen oxides, which when combined with water, produce nitric and sulfuric acids. Following are the reactions that occur:-
SO2(g)+H2O(l)H2SO4(aq)

H2SO4(aq)H(aq)++HSO4(aq)-

NO2(g)+H2O(l)HNO3(aq)

HNO3(aq)H+(aq)+NO3(aq)-

Acidification causes the release of soil-bound aluminum, which can be hazardous to both plants and animals when dissolved in water. If this aluminum pollutes streams and rivers, it may harm fish gills, preventing them from breathing properly. Metal cations like calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium ions are neutralized by acid rain. Currently, calcium and magnesium ions are secondary plant nutrients required for a healthy plant's growth. But because acid rain neutralizes these cations, the number of them in the soil drops, which lowers the soil's fertility.
Some plant species are also directly harmed by acid rain. For example, it depletes calcium from the cell membranes of Red spruce tree needles, making the needles more susceptible to damage from freezing in the winter. Because marble and limestone are directly dissolved by acid rain, monuments made of these materials are also damaged.

Hence, the correct answer is option D.
