Detailed Solution

Correct Answer: 4

Reaction (simple)

Starting allylic/benzene derivative + HCl (1 equiv.) →  Cyclized saturated product (X)

Answer:

Why cyclization happens: HCl protonates the alkene to give a stable benzylic/allylic carbocation. This carbocation attacks the aromatic ring intramolecularly, forming a new C–C bond and a saturated cyclic product. The C=C is consumed during this step, so X does not decolorize bromine water.

Why there are 4 isomers: The cyclization creates two new stereogenic centres. Two stereocentres give 2² = 4 possible stereoisomers (a combination of enantiomers/diastereomers). Hence, the total number of isomeric compounds for X is 4.
