The government has launched a major road development project called Golden Quadrilateral Super Highways to reduce the distance and time taken to travel between four megacities in India. This highway project was launched in 2001 as a part of the NHDP, the National Highways Development Project, and was operational by 2012. The Golden Quadrilateral links Delhi-Kolkata-Chennai-Mumbai and Delhi by six-lane superhighways. This project also includes the East-West Corridor connecting Silchar (Assam) and Porbandar (Gujarat) and the North-South corridor linking Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir) and Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu). Currently, these highway projects are being implemented by the NHAI, the National Highway Authority of India.
