The given statement is true. The Rashtrakutas in the Deccan were initially under the control of the Chalukyas of Karnataka. However, a Rashtrakuta chief named Dantidurga deposed his Chalukya overlord in the middle of the eighth century by engaging in a ceremony known as Aranya-garbha (literally, the golden womb). It was believed that when this ritual was carried out with the aid of Brahmanas, the sacrificer would experience a "rebirth" as a Kshatriya, even if he had never been one before. In other instances, men from prosperous families used their military prowess to establish kingdoms. Brahmanas who abandoned their traditional occupations and turned to armed conflict include the Kadamba Mayurasharman and the GurjaraPratihara Harichandra. They both succeeded in establishing kingdoms in Karnataka and Rajasthan.
