Nagabhata I (730–760 CE) established the imperial Gurjara Pratihara dynasty. He began by ruling the Avanti region from Ujjain, extending it to include portions of contemporary Gujarat and Rajasthan. He is believed to have defeated the Arab invaders from Sindh, but Dantidurga, the Rashtrakuta king, ultimately won. Nagabhata is identified as the founder of the imperial Pratihara dynasty in the Gwalior inscription of his descendant Mihira Bhoja. On what day Nagabhata formally assumed the throne is unknown. Vatsaraja, his grand-nephew, is known to have ruled Avanti from 783 to 784 CE. Nagabhata is thought to have come to the throne around 730 CE if one uses a 25-year generational cycle.
