Hindi was identified as one of the official languages of India, but no Indian language is accorded the status of the national language.
India is a nation of diversity, and many different languages are used throughout the country. About 40 percent of Indians speak the Hindi language, which is why it was identified as the official language of India. Besides Hindi, the Constitution recognized 21 other languages as Scheduled Languages. But the Constitution did not give the status of national language to any one language. Both English and Hindi are used by the government for official purposes. Other recognized regional languages are also used for official purposes by the states.
