An 11th-century Chahamana ruler named Ajaydeva established the city. The name of the city is first mentioned in Palha's Pattavali, which was copied in 1113 CE (1170 VS) in Dhara, according to historian Dasharatha Sharma. Garib Nawaz, also known as Moinuddin Chisti, the creator of the Chisti order of Sufism, is buried in Ajmer at the renowned Dargah Sharif, which is also home to other important religious structures. Everyone of all faiths enjoys visiting the shrine. Hindus consider Pushkar to have been the home of Lord Brahma, making it a sacred city as well.
