Matthew Boulton, a British manufacturer and engineer funded and popularised James Watt's steam engine. Boulton became interested in Watt's idea because he needed a power source for his plant. They started the steam engine industry by building pumping machines to drain the Cornish tin mines with the help of an engineer and inventor, William Murdock. Boulton asked Watt to make the double-acting rotative engine, patented in 1782, and the Watt engine, patented in 1788, to power the lapping machines at his business.
