Detailed Solution

Consumption of food rose in late eighteenth century Britain due to the food prices falling.
The laws that allowed the government to do this were called the ‘Corn Laws. Unhappy with the high food price, industrialists and city dwellers demanded the abolition of the Corn Code. Following the repeal of the Corn Code, food could not be imported into Britain at a lower price than what could be produced in the country. British agriculture could not compete with imports. Large areas were now abandoned, and thousands of men and women were fired from their jobs. They moved to cities or overseas. As food prices fall, consumption in Britain increases. From the middle of the nineteenth century, rapid industrial growth in Britain led to higher incomes, thus increasing food exports.
