Copper sulphate solution for the test of proteins is prepared by dissolving 2 grams of copper sulphate in 100 mL of water.

Proteins are required by our bodies for muscle growth and tissue repair. Foods containing proteins are called ‘body-building foods.

The presence of proteins can be tested in our diet by using chemicals like copper sulphate and caustic soda. The following steps are required for determining the presence of protein in a given food item.

  • Take the food sample in the form of a paste or powder.
  • Take a test tube and pour a small amount of the food sample into it. Now add 10 drops of water and shake the test tube.
  • Add two drops of copper sulphate solution and ten drops of caustic soda solution to the test tube with the help of a dropper.
  • Allow the contents to settle for some time.
  • If the contents in the test tube turn violet in colour after some time, the presence of proteins can be inferred.
