Carbon dioxide and water can cause the corrosion of copper.
Copper corrosion is the corrosion of copper or copper alloy materials. Copper oxidises when exposed to air, causing normally bright copper surfaces to tarnish. After a few years, the tarnish gradually turns dark brown or black, then green. Carbon dioxide and water react with copper to form copper hydroxide [Cu(OH)2] and copper carbonate [CuCO3], which appears as a greenish coating. The reaction is:
                                2Cu + H2O + CO2 + O2  Cu(OH)2 + CuCO3
