Detailed Solution

Countrywide political parties are called national parties.
Parties such as Congress and the BJP, for example, have both national and state units. The state units follow the same programmes and policies as followed at the central level. The Election Commission recognises a party as a national party if it receives at least 6% of the total votes cast in Lok Sabha or Assembly elections in four states and gets at least 4 seats in the Lok Sabha. National parties form the centre of government and can also form governments in states, either alone or in a coalition with regional parties.
