Detailed Solution

CPI(M) was in power in West Bengal for thirty-four years.
From 1977 to 2011, the CPI(M) ruled West Bengal with absolute power. It was overthrown in a political tumult in 2011 by the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC-Congress coalition. The Left Front, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), gained 231 seats in the 1977 election for the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, giving it a majority and leaving the Indian National Congress with just 20 seats. Jyoti Basu was appointed Chief Minister of the initial Left Front administration. During this time, the state saw fast changes, with the Panchayat System and Land Reforms being only two of many noteworthy ones. The state was now one of the top agricultural producers in the world, producing the most rice.
