In situ conservation refers to the conservation of biodiversity within its natural habitat or ecosystem. Ex situ conservation refers to the conservation of biodiversity outside of its natural habitat.
The conventional methods of ex situ conservation include botanical gardens, zoological parks, gene banks and seed banks.
The advanced biotechnological methods of ex situ conservation include cryopreservation and in vitro conservation using tissue culture. Cryopreservation is a technique of preserving living cells, tissues, organs, or entire organisms at very low temperatures (–1960C), in liquid nitrogen to slow down their metabolic activity and prevent deterioration.
