Cultivation of Commercial crops was encouraged by the colonial government.
The colonial government encouraged the cultivation of commercial crops in India. Commercial crops were those in higher demand in Europe and reaped enormous profits. The colonialists considered forests wilderness because they didn’t generate any revenue. So the government took over the forests and cleared them for cultivation. These lands were handed over to European planters to undertake plantation cultivation. Tea, coffee, rubber, sugar, etc., were encouraged in these plantations. Labour for these plantations was provided from across the nation. These crops served as raw materials for many British industries.
