Detailed Solution

Cutting of trees on a large scale is called deforestation.

Forest is an area dominated by trees and vegetation. Various living organisms inhabit forest and survive on its resources, including humans. When these large number of trees of an area are cut for commercial purposes, or for urbanisation, transport and other reasons, it leads to mass destruction of not only trees but also the wildlife, this is termed as deforestation.

On the contrary, when large number of trees are grown, its termed as afforestation.
